Tile work is one of those trades where the difference between good and great is immediately visible – and impossible to hide. A perfectly laid herringbone pattern with consistent, clean grout lines looks effortless. The same pattern laid by someone less experienced looks exactly like that. At The HandyForce, tiling is one of our most requested services, and one where our experience across every tile type, format, and application genuinely shows.
We install ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass, steel, and mosaic tile. We work with small intricate mosaic pieces and with showstopper large-format slabs up to 4 by 8 feet – the kind of tile that most installers avoid because the margin for error is so small. We do heated tile floors, wet room installations, mud rooms, feature walls, backsplashes, shower surrounds, and outdoor-adjacent spaces like enclosed porches.
In short: if it’s tile, we do it.
Most of our clients prefer to let us handle tile selection. The process works exactly the same way as our renovation material selection – we find out what style you’re after, source options from our supplier network, and bring samples to your home. You see them in your actual space, under your actual light, next to your actual cabinets or walls. No driving from store to store. No carrying home samples that look different once you get them there.
If you’ve already found tiles you love – at a specific shop, or online – we’re happy to work with them. Either way, we’ll advise on what works technically for your application before anything is ordered.
Bathrooms are our most common tiling environment. Full shower surrounds, wet room floors, tub surrounds, feature walls, and floor-to-ceiling tile installs are all work we do regularly. For shower floors and wet areas, proper waterproofing membrane installation is non-negotiable – tile is only as good as what’s underneath it.
We had a client in East York with triplet boys – bath time, as you might imagine, is chaotic. They needed a bathroom that was entirely waterproof – not just splash-resistant, but genuinely waterproof from floor to wall. We treated the entire bathroom floor like a walk-in shower, installing a full waterproof membrane underneath the tile across the whole floor area. An unusual problem that needed an unusual solution. The result is a bathroom that can handle whatever three young boys throw at it.
Heated tile floors are particularly popular in basement bathrooms and main floor bathrooms in Toronto homes. Concrete floors get genuinely cold in Canadian winters – underfloor heating changes the entire experience of the space. We install electric heating mats beneath the tile and can tie them into a programmable thermostat and our preferred brand is Schluter. Warm floors, cold mornings – it’s one of those upgrades clients never regret.
Large format tile – anything from 24×24 inches and up – creates a clean, contemporary look with fewer grout lines. It’s technically demanding to install correctly: the substrate needs to be perfectly flat, lippage (one tile edge sitting higher than the next) becomes more visible at larger sizes, and back-buttering technique matters more than with standard tile. We install large format tile regularly, including statement slabs that most tile installers won’t take on.
Tile is the right call for any space where wet boots, road salt, and heavy foot traffic are facts of life. Toronto winters make mud rooms and enclosed porches some of the hardest-working floors in the house. Porcelain tile is durable, frost-resistant (for partially exposed areas), and easy to clean. We tile these spaces regularly and can help you choose a material and finish that performs as well as it looks.
Kitchen backsplashes and bathroom feature walls are where tile becomes genuinely decorative. Subway tile, herringbone, penny rounds, handmade ceramic, metallic glass – we install all of them. The cut work around outlets, switches, and fixtures is where quality shows, and it’s where we take our time.
For tiling as part of a larger renovation – bathroom, kitchen, or basement – see our bathroom renovation, kitchen renovation, and basement renovation pages.
Either works. In most cases we supply it – we bring samples to your home based on what you’re after, so you see them in context before anything is ordered. If you’ve already found tiles you want, we’re happy to install them. We’ll confirm they’re appropriate for your application before we start.
Yes – this is something we do regularly, particularly in basement and main floor bathrooms. We install electric heating mats beneath the tile and coordinate thermostat installation. It’s one of those upgrades that has a disproportionate impact on how a bathroom feels, especially in a Toronto winter.
We install large format tile up to and including 4×8 foot slabs. These require a perfectly flat substrate, careful back-buttering, and specific trowel technique to avoid lippage. It’s demanding work that many installers avoid – we do it regularly.
Yes. Matching existing tile can be tricky if the original run is discontinued, but we assess the situation and advise on the best approach. Sometimes a partial replacement works. Sometimes a feature accent is a smarter solution than trying to match perfectly. Our handyman services team handles smaller tile repairs without the need for a full project quote.
A standard bathroom floor and tub surround typically takes 2 to 3 days – one day for layout and installation, time for thinset to cure, then grouting and finishing. Large format tile and complex patterns take longer. Your quote will include a day-by-day timeline.
We serve homeowners across East York, North York, Leaside, the Beaches, Leslieville, Cabbagetown, and the surrounding Toronto neighbourhoods. Our office is at 1352C Woodbine Ave in East York.
