Deck Building Toronto

A well-built deck changes how you use your home. In Toronto, where outdoor space is often limited and summers are genuinely worth making the most of, a deck that’s designed and built properly – with the right materials, the right structure, and the right finish – becomes one of the most used spaces in the house. At The HandyForce, we build decks, rebuild deteriorating ones, repair specific problems, and handle everything from the permit application to the final coat of stain.

Deck Materials

Pressure Treated Wood – The Most Popular Choice

Pressure treated lumber is the most common decking material in Toronto – and for good reason. It’s cost-effective, structurally sound, widely available, and when properly maintained, performs well for decades in Toronto’s climate. We use brown pressure treated lumber, which most clients find significantly more attractive than the green ACQ alternative. We paint and seal pressure treated decks as part of the job – the right sealant applied at the right time extends the life of the wood dramatically.

Composite Decking

Composite decking – products like Trex – is the premium alternative to wood. It’s made from a combination of wood fibre and plastic, which means it doesn’t rot, split, warp, or splinter, and never needs staining or sealing. The trade-off is cost: composite decking is significantly more expensive than pressure treated. For clients who want a deck that will genuinely last a lifetime with minimal maintenance, it’s worth every dollar. For clients with a tighter budget, pressure treated with proper maintenance is an excellent choice.

Real project: A client in The Beaches needed a full front porch rebuild after termite damage destroyed the original structure. The rebuild used Trex composite decking, aluminum railings, and steel support posts finished with PVC capping – specifically designed so that termites would have nothing to eat, ever again. See the full story on our Beaches page.

Railings – Wood, Aluminum, and Glass

Railing choice has as much impact on the look of a deck as the decking itself. Wood railings match a traditional pressure treated deck naturally and can be painted or stained to coordinate with the home. Aluminum railings are maintenance-free, extremely durable, and available in a range of colours and profiles. Glass panel railings – increasingly popular in Toronto – maximise the view and create a contemporary look. We install all three.

Deck Repairs

Not every deck problem requires a full rebuild. We do a significant volume of deck repair work – and we approach it with the same honesty we bring to roofing and siding: we fix what needs fixing rather than replacing what doesn’t.

Board Replacement

Individual boards that have split, rotted, or cupped can be replaced without touching the rest of the deck. We match existing decking where possible and blend the repair so it’s not obvious where the new boards are.

Post and Structural Repair

Deck posts that sit too close to the ground – or directly on the ground – are the most common structural failure point. We replace failed posts, sister compromised joists, and repair ledger connections that have pulled away from the house.

Deck Staining and Refinishing

An unprotected wood deck in Toronto turns grey within a season or two and starts to crack and split within a few years. We sand, clean, and apply penetrating stain or semi-transparent finish as a standalone service. See our painting page for more on deck finishing.

Permits - What You Need to Know

Decks over 24 inches in height require a building permit from the City of Toronto. Depending on your property, the city may also require a survey and in some cases a tree preservation study – particularly where existing trees are near the proposed deck location. We manage the full permit process including coordinating the survey and tree study where required. You don’t need to navigate this yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the deck surface is more than 24 inches above grade at any point, yes – a building permit is required. Lower decks may not require a permit, but it depends on the specific configuration. We assess permit requirements at the quote stage and manage the application process.

Building permit timelines vary, but typically run 4 to 8 weeks for residential deck permits. Where a survey or tree study is required, those need to be completed before the permit application is submitted. We factor all of this into the project timeline from the start so there are no surprises.

A properly built and maintained pressure treated deck in Toronto typically lasts 15 to 25 years. The key factors are post installation (posts should be set on concrete footings, not in ground contact), proper drainage so water doesn’t pool on the surface, and regular sealing – every 2 to 3 years. We build with longevity in mind and advise on maintenance at the end of every project.

For most clients, yes – over time. Composite decking costs roughly 3 to 4 times more than pressure treated upfront, but it never needs staining, never splinters, doesn’t rot, and looks good indefinitely with minimal maintenance. Over a 25-year period, the total cost of ownership is often comparable once you factor in the staining and refinishing that pressure treated requires. If you plan to stay in your home long-term and want a deck you never have to think about, composite is worth it.
