Eavestroughs Toronto

Eavestroughs are one of those home systems that nobody thinks about until they fail – and when they fail, they fail expensively. Water that can’t drain properly off your roof finds other places to go: behind the fascia, into the soffit, down the foundation wall, into the basement. At The HandyForce, eavestrough work is something we do constantly – as a standalone service and as part of every roofing project we complete.

Eavestrough Services

Eavestrough Repair

Most eavestrough problems don’t require full replacement. Sagging sections that have pulled away from the fascia can be re-secured. Joints that have separated can be resealed. End caps that have failed can be replaced. Downspout connections that have come loose can be reattached. We assess the condition of the full system and repair what needs repairing – we don’t replace what doesn’t need replacing.

Eavestrough Replacement

When eavestroughs are corroded, severely damaged, or undersized for the roof area they’re draining, replacement is the right answer. We supply and install seamless aluminum eavestroughs – cut on-site to the exact length needed, with no joints along the run. Fewer joints mean fewer potential leak points. We also replace fascia board where it has rotted behind failing eavestroughs – because new eavestroughs attached to rotten wood won’t stay attached for long.

Eavestrough Cleaning

A blocked eavestrough is one of the leading causes of ice dams in Toronto winters. Leaves, seeds, and debris accumulate over the season and prevent water from draining. When that water freezes at the eaves, it backs up under shingles and causes interior damage. We clean eavestroughs as a standalone service and as part of our seasonal Homecare Plan. See our Homecare Plan for how we keep this and other maintenance items off your to-do list year-round.

The City of Toronto provides resources on managing rainwater and basement flooding – proper eavestrough drainage is one of the most effective preventive measures.’

Gutter Guard Installation

Gutter guards – mesh covers that sit over the eavestrough opening and allow water in while keeping debris out – dramatically reduce the frequency of cleaning needed. They’re not maintenance-free, but they significantly reduce the volume of debris that accumulates. We supply and install gutter guards as a standalone service and in combination with new eavestrough installation.

Downspout Heater Cables

Downspout heater cables are a Toronto-specific solution that most homeowners don’t know exists. A self-regulating heat cable installed inside the downspout prevents ice from forming in the pipe during freeze-thaw cycles – keeping water flowing even when temperatures drop well below zero. For homes that experience recurring ice buildup in downspouts or at the base of the drainage system, a heater cable is one of the most practical preventive investments available. We supply and install them.

Fascia, Soffit, and Flashing

Fascia and soffit are the finishing elements that close off the roofline – and they’re often the first thing to rot when eavestroughs fail and water gets behind them. We replace rotted fascia and soffit as part of eavestrough work, and we install drip edge flashing at the roof-to-eavestrough junction where it’s missing. Proper flashing directs water into the eavestrough rather than behind it.

Why Eavestroughs Matter More in Toronto

Toronto’s climate is hard on eavestrough systems. The freeze-thaw cycle – multiple times per winter – expands and contracts joints, cracks sealants, and stresses fasteners. Spring brings heavy rainfall that tests drainage capacity. Summer brings tree debris. Fall brings leaf loads that can block a system in a single week.

We raise awareness of eavestrough condition with every roofing and exterior job we do – because a small blockage or a loose section caught early is a one-hour fix. The same problem ignored becomes a fascia replacement, a soffit replacement, and potentially a foundation waterproofing project.

Frequently Asked Questions

At minimum, once per year – ideally in late fall after the leaves have finished dropping. Homes with significant tree cover nearby may need cleaning twice a year. Our Homecare Plan includes eavestrough cleaning as part of the seasonal maintenance schedule.

Not necessarily. Eavestroughs pull away from the fascia when the screws have failed or the fascia board behind them has rotted. If the eavestrough itself is in good condition, re-securing it and replacing the fascia where needed is often sufficient. We assess the condition of both before recommending replacement.

A downspout heater cable is a self-regulating electrical cable that runs inside the downspout and prevents ice from forming. They’re particularly useful for homes where the downspout faces north, is shaded, or is in an area that experiences recurring ice buildup. If you’ve had a downspout freeze solid in winter – causing water to back up and overflow – a heater cable is worth considering.

No – but they significantly reduce the frequency and the volume of debris. Small particles like pine needles and seed pods can still get through or accumulate on top of the guard. Most homeowners with gutter guards find they clean once every two to three years rather than annually. We’ll advise on the right product for the type of tree cover around your home.
